Cool Re: Car Tips

If your ride's license plates are damaged (bent or warped, or the paint has begun to craze or peel so that your number can't easily be read), check with your state's motor vehicle department about replacement license plates. In most states, they can be replaced at little or no cost to you.

Cool Re: Car Tips

To keep your windshield--and your windshield wipers--in the best possible shape, DO NOT operate the wipers on dry glass. To do so will smear the dirt and crud that's on your windshield across the glass, damaging both the wipers and increasing the possibility of scratches to the windshield glass itself.

Always hit the windshield washer button before running the wipers on dry glass (another reason to keep the reservoir full!)...

If you get scratches on the glass, use an old, damp cloth and plain old toothpaste (not gel) to rub and polish the scratch away...

Cool Re: Car Tips

Most, if not all, new cars today have electric defroster wires and/or radio antennae bonded to the inside of the rear window glass.

Do not put rear window stickers of any type over the grid (not even the temporary sticker you may have to use as part of a funeral procession). If you have to remove them, it's likely you'll damage the grid, which can be costly and time-consuming to repair. (In my experience, those paint-on wiring repair kits never work properly, so it's best to stop the problem before it starts.)

When purchasing a new car, the dealer may encourage you to buy add-on accessories at additional cost. Some of them are useful (like adding cruise control to a car that didn't come with one from the factory). Some, like extra chrome trim, mud flaps, trunk mats, etc. are useful only for adding extra profits to the salesman's commission. Choose carefully and you may find an item that fits your needs and cost less (for example, a plastic hamper for jumper cables, first aid kit, etc., rather than the "factory" trunk tray and cargo mat).

Lightbulb Blinded by the light (sensor)

In many new cars with automatic headlamps, there is a round dome-shaped sensor on the top center of the dashboard (you'll see it through the windshield from the outside). If you cover the sensor with papers or other items, the sensor will think it's night time and run the headlights (and all outside lights) as if it were dark. Keep the sensor clear and you'll save unnecessary wear on your vehicle light bulbs.
