Entertaining Tips

Plan! Entertaining guests properly requires thoughtful planning. Get everything out on paper first. List the number of guests, what you will serve, what entertainment, the day, the time, etc.

Give everyone plenty of advance notice of your dinner, party or event. Send out your invitations early so they have time to schedule you in and make their arrangements accordingly.

Be sure you have the proper accomodations. Do you have enough table space? Enough chairs? Do you have enough room? Where will people sit? Consider a venue other than your home if you need more space. You can often rent clubhouses or rooms in country clubs or hotels.

Look for a theme that fits your event or your guest's interests. It makes it more fun to create around a theme. For example, you could have a luau or a 50's theme, or maybe you can have a golf theme and decorate with golfing paraphenelia.

If you are planning for food at your get-together, be it appetizers or dinner or dessert, plan accordingly for the needs of your guests. Make sure you have something that any vegetarians you've invited over can eat!

If you decide to have activities or games at your event, make sure that they fit the guests and the theme, if applicable. You want to find activities that everyone can participate in and enjoy. Also, be sure that the games or activities are appropriate for the mood of the event.

Depending on the type of event you're planning, when you send invitations or let people know about the event, be sure to let them know what is appropriate attire. The last thing you want is for someone to "come as they are" to a semi-formal event!

If you have a lot of guests attending your party, make sure you have plans for all their cars too. It's never fun when a friend's car is towed.

If you are considering on having alcohol at your event, you need to consider how everyone is going to get home. You can arrange for taxis to get everyone home or take everyone's keys to make sure no one drives drunk. You should be aware of when guests are leaving so you can make sure they are sober or have a designated driver.

Make sure you have a budget for your party. Set a limit of how much you want to spend and then even subdivide that into how much you will spend on each aspect of your party such as food, decorations, invitations, beverages, etc. Also, keep some money aside for any "party" emergencies that may arise. Costs for throwing a party can spiral out of control pretty quickly, so if you plan ahead you can keep a handle on that and enjoy your event rather than worrying about how much you spent.

Do not go into your party thinking that everything has to be perfect. Your main goal should be to have fun but if you spend all of your time worrying about every little detail then you won't be able to enjoy that fun. Things will go wrong. It's up to you whether you stress or just laugh about them.

Cool Ice, ice, baby...

No matter what kind of party you're throwing, fresh, clean ice is a must.

Plan ahead at least a week prior to the party and let your automatic icemaker produce the ice you need so you don't have to rush to the store at the last minute. Be sure to store the extra ice in containers or closed bags in the freezer (if you have a chest freezer, so much the better!)

Be sure to dump old or stale ice out before starting to make a fresh batch; not only will you get rid of ice that tastes like last week's homemade salsa (or worse), be aware that ice cubes stored in the icemaker for extended periods of time may tend to evaporate (the same system that keeps fridges and freezers "frostproof" will make ice cubes disappear much the same way).
