Default Organization Tips

Go up! Are you using the vertical space in your home to its fullest advantage? Walls are great places to store things like DVD's and CD using wall racks. Have bookshelves that go from floor to ceiling. In your closets have shelves that go all the way up so that you can store out of season clothes at the top. Take advantage of the space under your bed as well with storage containers that roll out.

Get rid of stuff you don't need on a regular basis. For some people this will be one a week, for others its once a month. Which ever works best for you, do it. This will help keep the amount of clutter down in your home. You will be able to trash things that are broken, and give away things to charity that you no longer want, need, or use.

Before you leave your desk at night, take a few moments to put away the papers and pens that are lying around. There is nothing like walking in your office in the morning and seeing a clean desk to start the day with.

You child's playroom can be overwhelming with their toys. Have them help you clean up at the end of the day. It will instill cleanliness in them, and its less work for you. It will also help them to know where their toys are when they want to play with them again instead of having to make a huge mess searching for it.

Take advantage of the hundreds of organizational tools that are out there. Things like hooks for jackets, baskets for toys on shelves, dividers for magazines and papers…the possibilities are endless.

Using open racks for storage, as well as glass fronted pantries, will help you stay organized. Most people just hide their clutter behind doors so that the don't see it. If you have shelves and pantries that everyone can see into when they walk into the room, then there is nowhere to hide things.

Take the time to organize. If you are just starting to get organized then it's going to be hard to get started. Just keep telling yourselves all the good things that come from having an organized home and you will get through it. Plus you only have to "get organized" once. After that its just a matter of staying organized.

Have some fun in getting rid of your stuff. As you're organizing set aside things to sell at either a bug yard/garage sale, or to sell on e-bay/craigslist. Once your have sold a bunch of your stuff, then you can treat yourself to something nice - like a date night with your husband or wife.

Create a schedule and a budget for organizing your home. Giving yourself a time table will help keep yourself on track. Set reasonable goals for completing something, and then give yourself a reward. Keep a budget for purchasing things that will help keep you organized. Make sure that whatever you are buying you will use for the long term.

Make sure that you have a designated place in your home for all of your most important documents. A fire proof box is a great way to store and protect things like birth certificates, social security cards, passports, insurance documents and warranties.

Buy a battery storage case for your garage or kitchen storage area. I've got one that hangs on the wall and it's nice! I always know where to find spare batteries. It even sorts them into C batteries, D batteries, AA batteries, AAA batteries and transistor batteries.

I like to color code things now and then for organization. It not only looks good but you can usually find things faster if every item has its cooresponding color.

In your home office, computer area, or even your entertainment center, containing disorderly wires is very important. Bundle extra long cords together to help keep them out of site. Also, label all of your cords so that you know what connects to what.

If you know you are disorganized and want to organize a room, its best to start with small projects. If you try to take on the whole room at once you might get overwhelmed and give up.

Use things like plastic food containers, shoe boxes, zip lock bags and old jars to store things in. You can not only write on the outside of the containers as to what's in it but you can have your kids decorate the containers for you.

If you haven't already, invest in a few filing cabinets. Set up a system with manilla folders and keep everything filed under its theme: Doctor; Utilities; Credit Card Statements; etc. You'll find that if you organize and file your bills and papers away right after you use them, everything is always so much easier to find.

Cool Re: Organization Tips

Those square little plastic closures used on bread and bun bags make it easy to tell which wire is which on your cable TV, computer or stereo system. They come in different colors corresponding to sale or freshness dates, and you can label them with a permanent marker or pen (a yellow tag for speaker wire, a green wire for your keyboard and mouse connections, etc.).

Attach one to each power cord for your countertop appliances to tell which cord is for the toaster, coffee maker, mixer, etc.

Organize your closets by hanging like items together. All of you pants together, long sleeve shirts together, etc. If you want to get even more organized you can then organize things by color so that all of your blue long sleeve shirts are together.

Flat storage boxes that slide under your bed are a great way to store seasonal items out of the way.

Going up is a great idea! In your garage, "up" is the perfect place for bikes, ladders, or garden tools. Go to you local hardware store and you can find just about anything to get your stuff up and out of the way.
