Pest Control Tips

Do not allow any food items to sit out open on counters or tables. Pests see this as an open invitation to come and get what they want. This includes simple crumbs and grease spills. Make sure you thoroughly clean any area where you have been preparing food.

If you have a chimney, make sure that you either have a chimney cap or wire mesh over the top of it. This will help prevent squirrels, mice, birds and raccoons from getting in and creating a disaster.

Seal all openings that may exist around your house. This includes areas where pipes, cables, and wires enter through walls. No matter how small the opening is, a pest of some kind will manage to get in.

If you have a large pest infestation, call a professional in to help. Don’t try to handle it by yourself.

When using pest killers such as bug spray, or chemicals, make sure that you use them away from any children or pets you have in your home.

Do not keep any firewood stored too closely to your home. Also, keep it stored off of the ground and well covered from rain and snow.

If you have pets – to keep a flea infestation from happening, make sure you use a flea medication every month. Don’t skip the winter months just because it is cold and you don’t see as many fleas. As soon as it’s warm it will not take long for one flea to become thousands. If your pet is medicated, that one flea will not live.

If you have a woodstove and are bringing wood into your house, make sure that where you store your wood outside is off the ground. This will help keep insects such as ants and termites out of the stack. It will also help keep other animals such as mice and snakes from making a home for themselves between pieces of wood.

Regardless of where you store extra things (your child’s baby clothes, Christmas supplies, etc.) in your home – the attic, a closet, a spare bedroom – it is best to go through it every few months to make sure containers are still sealed and nothing unwanted has taken up residence.

A really cheap way to keep ants out of your kitchen is to leave out a cucumber peel. Basil is another good bug deterrent that's also good for cooking!

If you ever have a flea infestation, vacuum the carpets daily and dispose of the collected dust and fleas at the end of each vacuuming. Throw away the dust and fleas in a plastic garbage bag in a sealed trashcan outside.

Another way to help get rid of fleas is to place all toys, blankets, and other items inside garbage bags and tightly seal them up for a few days.

A cheap way to keep pests away from your garden is this: mix 1 TBS of dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Then, mix about 3 TBS of this mixture into a quart of water in a pump bottle and spray your plants.

Strangely enough Bounce Fabric Softener can repel mosquitoes. The Oleander in the fabric softener is what scares them off. Tie it to your clothing while you're working outside or even tie it to your tent while you're camping.

If you own a home have an annual termite inspection. It will cost about $65/per year but it is lots cheaper than repairing termite damage.

Make sure the drainage around your foundation is good and that your crawl space or basement stays dry.

If you have a flea infestation, keep an eye out for carpet cleaner with Borate in it. When cleaning, make sure you vacuum multiple times and throw away the bags outside.
