During the summer, make sure that your dog is not outside during the hottest part of the day. Just like humans, dogs can suffer from a form of heat stroke. If your dog stays outside make sure they are well shaded and have fresh clean water all day long.

Never ever leave a dog in a vehicle! Even on cooler days the temperature in there get very dangerously hot – so hot that a dog can die from the heat.

If you are going to feed you dog a diet with homemade food using “people” foods (ie: chicken, rice, etc.) make sure you train your dog what is theirs and what is yours so that they are not begging at the table or stealing your dinner off the countertop. Feeding them at a time separate from when you are eating your meals will help with this.

If you love dogs, but are unable to have one – because your parents say no, you live in an apartment that does not allow them, or you live with someone who is allergic – you can still spend time around dogs. Volunteer at your local animal shelter by offering to help with adoptions, walking dogs, cleaning cages, or just spending time with the dogs so that they get some interaction with a human.

Make sure that you keep your dog protected from fleas and ticks all year round. While these pests are more common during the summer months, you need to continue protection all year long. The two most common methods for prevention are flea collars and monthly flea and tick medication.

Don't get a high energy dog if you live in an apartment unless you plan on spending lots of time outside with it.

Avoid getting metal water dishes for your dog if he stays outside. During the winter there is a chance his tongue will get stuck to the side of the bowl. During the summer, it could get too hot and burn him.

Don't be afraid to let your dog know who is the boss. Dogs want a leader. If you are not their leader they will assume that they are your leader.

Teach your dog to come when it is called! Start early. You can use a dog treat as a reward at first and then just lots of affection.

If you have a crate for your dog -make it a refuge and not a prison. Use the crate to create a safe place for your dog. Something it will enjoy being in when you are not around. Never use the crate for punishment.

Teach your dog a few tricks and practice them often. Many breeds were once working dogs and like to perform tasks for you. Before you give your dog a treat have it do a little trick for you.

Feed your dog well and don't skimp on the quality of their food, but remember people food is not for dogs. Although, some plain well-cooked ground beef or other unseasoned meat can be a nice treat!

A Dog can be a great way to meet people. Take your dog to a park and see how many people want to pet it and ask you all kinds of questions about it.

Take a tip from your dog. He is like a Zen Master. Hang out with him under a tree and just relax.
