Beer Tips

Drink responsibly when you are enjoying a drink. Don't drink if you are under the age of 21, and most importantly don't drive if you drink.

An "Ale" beer is one that uses yeast that ferments at the "top" of the fermentation vessel. These beers have a quicker fermentation period then the lager beers.

There are some beers that will begin to taste better with age, much like wine. Some of these beers include old ales, barleywines, Belgian strong ales, and vintage beers. They should be stored upright in a cool dark place, such as a cellar.

A "Lager" beer is one that uses bottom fermenting yeast that works slowly, meaning these beers have a longer fermentation period then the ale beers.

Do a search of your surrounding area for local breweries. The Internet is a great place to start looking. Also, ask the bartender the next time you are in your favorite bar if they know of any local breweries that you can buy drinks from. Not only will you find you may like the local beer as much as the imported drinks, but you will be supporting the local economy!

Take the time to learn some of the terminology when it comes to drinking beer. If you hear a term mentioned you've never heard before, ask what it means, or jot it down to look it up later. Knowing this terminology will help you out when you go to a bar or pub to order something. It will help you know what you like and don't like about certain beers.

What is Hops? It's a portion of a flowering plant (Humulus Lupulus) that is use in the fermentation of beer to alter its flavoring and to stabilize the beer. It helps to prevent spoilage, with head retention, and to clear beer.

If you plan on drinking beer on a consistent basis, you may want to look into buying or building a Kegerator. The Kegerator is basically a home beer dispenser similar to what they have at bars. Buying beer in kegs will save you money in the long run.

If you enjoy lighter beers, such as Corona, from the bottle, make sure that the bottle is kept in a cool, dark, place, as light can filter through to the bottle and affect the taste of the beer.

Want to experiment with new beer? Not all handcrafted and microbrewed beer has to be expensive to be enjoyable. Specialty food stores, such as Trader Joe's, Whole Foods Market, and Cost Plus World Market have a wide selection of beers available at a reasonable price and in a wide array of varieties and styles to fit anyone's palate.
