Default Debating Tips

Debating Tips

A good rule of thumb for debating is to have a calm and relaxed exterior with a smile on your face even if you are a nervous wreck on the inside with your stomach twisted in knots.

When ever it is your turn to speak, always look at the judge or moderator of the debate. You do need to glance over at your opponent to acknowledge that they are there, but never look only at your opponent and never turn your back to the judge or audience.

Stay confident about your argument. Don’t back down even if the judge/moderator is giving you non verbal clues that they do not like what you just said. Mentally acknowledge the cue and work to win them back to your side.

If you are with a partner or team debating against another team, avoid debating within your own team. You need to present a unified front about your position.

Watch the judge/moderator as you are speaking. Make a connection with them through eye contact. Take note of whether or not they are taking notes. If they start to and then stop, then perhaps you have started speaking to fast or your key points are not clear enough. Slow down and re-iterate what you are trying to say.

Remember to support the rest of your team, or your partner, but non-verbally showing that you agree with what they say. For example, when they make a sound point, nod your head in agreement.

Step out from behind the speakers stand if possible. This will make you appear more approachable to your audience. It will give them the since that you are comfortable with your argument as well as with speaking to them.

Choose your outfits carefully before going on stage to debate. Men – never wear elaborate ties – stick to classics, and don’t randomly decide to grow a beard the day before. Women – dress conservatively– nothing low cut. Also don’t go overboard with the makeup and jewelry.

When speaking behind a podium never lean on it or cross your feet. You should stand straight and tall with your hands resting lightly on the podium.

Remember to get a good night of sleep before a big debate. It does not look good to be standing on the stage making an argument and yawning half way through.

Eat a good meal before the debate, especially a well balanced healthy breakfast. Also drink plenty of fluids and water to keep yourself hydrated. Both of these things will help you to stay awake and alert during the debate.

Stay up to date on current events. Read newspapers and magazines. The more knowledge you have about not only a topic you are debating the better off you are. You never know when you might be able to make a comparison between something you read and what you are debating about.
