Default How Much to Tip

How Much to Tip

How much to tip a waiter or waitress a good starting place is 15% of your total bill. If you are feeling generous because you have a fabulous server you can increase the amount. If you feel as though you did not get the service you feel you deserved then you can lessen the amount.

How much to tip a food delivery person – because this can be dangerous (driving in bad neighborhoods and in bad weather) tips should start at 10% of the food total. If you feel it should be higher because of a complicated order you are free to tip more. If you feel the service was bad you can lessen the tip.

How much to tip parking valet – can be about 2-3 dollars for them to park your vehicle, and another 2-3 dollars for them to retrieve it. Keep in mind that there may have been a shift change and person who parked your vehicle is not the person who will be bringing it back to you.

How much to tip the hotel doorman/bellhop – for each service they provide you, you can give a dollar. If they help with your luggage then it should be a dollar per bag, if they call a cab for you, a dollar for that.

How much to tip cruise shop employees - this will vary depending on the cruse line. Sometimes the gratuities are included in the cost of your mean or drink, and sometimes it is not. Tipping your cabin steward and the person who takes your luggage onto the ship is common courtesy.

How much to tip taxi drivers – figuring how much to tip your taxi driver largely depends on where you are at. Expect to tip metropolitan drivers more than rural drivers. Figure on about 15% for rural and 20% for city. Also, if they help you with bags, be prepared to tip an extra dollar or two.

Lightbulb Tips for Tipping When Using a Restaurant Coupon

Coupons aren't just for cornflakes anymore!

Many restaurants--from national chains to your favorite local eatery--now print and accept discount coupons. For instance, it may be $4 off a particular dish or 15% off your total ticket.

When you use a coupon -- and if a tip is part of your bill -- don't shortchange your server. Tip him or her a percentage of your ticket total BEFORE any discounts...

Lightbulb Don't "double-tip!"

If you're taking a large party out to eat, be sure to check your receipt before paying or adding a tip. I recently celebrated a couple of family birthdays at a popular seafood "shack" and noted the following on the receipt:

"Parties of eight or more are subject to an automatic 18% gratuity as part as your bill."

If you don't, you may accidentally "double-tip," which could lead to a good case of indigestion when you pay the bill....
