Snow Shoveling Tips
Remember that the larger your shovel, the more weight you're throwing around. This could take a toll on you physically so you may want to consider using a smaller shovel or simply put less snow on the shovel at a time. |

Shoveling snow often leads to back strain. When you get ready to lift a shovel full of snow, be sure you lift with your legs. This keeps the strain off off your back. Also, taller people should try to find shovels that are longer so they don't have to bend over as far.

Try to shovel the snow as early as possible after coming down because that's when the snow is the lightest. Once its settled it has a chance to melt a bit and it also gets compacted. Both make the snow heavier.

Did you know that snow shoveling often causes heart attacks? This is because people underestimate the amount of "sudden" strain they are putting on their heart. If you're older and/or don't exercise regularly, your body may not be accustomed to such exertion. Take it slow and pace yourself. Also, avoid stimulants before shoveling snow (like caffeine beverages).

When shoveling snow, avoid twisting your body to dump the snow. Instead, move towards the direction you want to put the snow. This causes less strain on your body.

You don't have to try to shovel your entire property at once. It is recommended that you try shoveling in sections so that you are picking-up lighter snow loads on your shovel. This will decrease the strain put on your body.
