Default Job Interviewing Tips

Dress to impress! Even if you're applying for a small retail position, walk in there well dressed and well groomed. This will present a first impression that says you respect yourself and you care enough about the interview to fully prepare for it.

Fill out the employment application thoroughly and be sure to include phone numbers of all your previous places of employment. Write legibly and don't leave anything blank. If something doesn't apply to you, put "N/A" for "non-applicable".

Always sit up straight and use "yes sir" or "no mam" and "thank you" and "no thank you". Relax and be yourself. Don't be a phony or put on an act. Most employers can see right though it.

Learn as much as you can about the company you are interviewing with. This way when they ask you about your skill you can relate them to things that are going on within the company and how you can use those skills to benefit the company.

While you’re in the interview, stay relaxed and calm. If you are nervous and not paying attention, the interviewer might mistake it for a lack of interest in the position. Make sure you are listening to everything that is said so that when you are asked a question you are able to answer it intelligently.

Be on time! Of course on time means showing up at least 15 minutes early. If you are unsure of how long it will take to get you to the location then leave extra early. You never know when you might run into traffic problems.

Always send a thank you note. It is best to have the paper or card in your car so that you can fill it out as soon as you leave the interview and you can drop it into a mail box on your way home.

Be prepared with everything you might need. For example, if you are applying for an artistic position you will have to have your portfolio with you. You should also always have a copy of your resume and a list of references and how to contact them.

Have some questions in mind when you go into the interview that you want to have answered, but make sure they are not "easy" questions that the answers can be found on the company's website.

While in the interview do not ask about the salary or the benefits that go with the position. The interview is not the time or place to discuss this information. If you are offered the position, this is the time to discuss these items.

You may be asked to provide references to the potential employer. Have at least three to five people you can use as references. Make sure you get their approval to be used as references prior to giving out their name and contact information.

Are you nervous about your upcoming interview? Do a mock – practice – interview with a friend or family member. Have them pretend to be the person at the company you are interviewing for a position at. This will help you be more prepared for your real interview.

When applying for multiple jobs through various companies, make sure the interviews are scheduled several hours, if not on separate days, apart from one another. Every company performs their interview process differently and it is difficult and risky to gauge how long it will take. Punctuality for your interview is a positive reflection of an important aspect of work ethics. To an employer, showing up late for an interview may give the false impression that you are not timely and worse, not serious about the job.
