SEO Tips

Be sure you understand the important of textual content on your website. The search engines find your site by people putting keywords into Google or Bing. If those keywords are on your site, you have a better chance of showing up in the search results. Just be sure not to spam your site by repeating the same keywords over and over again. Your site can get penalized for that.

Make each page of your website be about a specific keyword or theme. For example, if you are making a page about guitars and it is specifically about electric guitars, label the page something like, tomsblog.com/electric-guitars.html.

Label your pictures with alt tags. This describes the picture and increases the chances of those pictures coming up for image results when someone searches on that particular subject. Also, be sure that the related keyword(s) is around the picture somewhere in text.

Be sure your page meta tags are filled out and accurately reflect the subject for that page. Each page should have a title, description and related keywords in the header area.

Keep your website updated as often as possible. Search engines these days (esp. Google) put special emphasis on current material. If you continually add textual content and images, you increase your chances of coming up higher in the rankings.

Avoid spelling and grammatical errors. Keep your site as clean as possible. Clean out any old broken links and be sure html coding is clean and tables are laid out properly. The cleaner your site is, the less you'll be penalized by search engines.

Never use black hat seo. That is "questionable" SEO techniques or tactics that are used to manipulate the search engines more than they are to deliver desired results for real people. Black hat seo usually ignores the rules of the road and are designed as a short cut (a form of cheating if you will) to getting faster results.

The higher the quality of your backlinks (other websites linking to you), the more likely you are to show up in the SERPS (search engine results pages). The quality of those sites are measure by popularity, domain extension, page rank, etc.

Never use "Click Here" to link to another page on your site. That phrase means nothing to the search bots. Think about the association of the page you're linking to and use the proper keywords.

Wrong: Click here to learn more about drumming.

Right: Learn more about drumming.

In the old days, the url extension (.html, .php, .asp, etc.) mattered when it came to showing up in search engines. That is no longer the case. The search engines show everything now so there's no cause for concern.
