Default Facebook Tips

As with all social networking sites, keep things decent and clean. You never know who is going to find you on these sites. It could be your teachers, professors and your boss or future bosses.

You are able to customize how each of your friends see you. Click on the “privacy” options and add the friends you want to see your “limited profile” to the list.

Jazz up your Facebook with pictures, videos and interesting information about YOU! Make it an enjoyable experience for the visitor to your page. Give them something to look at. Tell them about you and what you're made of... your likes, dislikes, interests, family, job, etc.

NEVER sign into your Facebook account from an e-mail or private message someone sent you. This is one way that people involved in phishing scams get your passwords. Be extra careful and always look at the url at the top of the page. Make sure it says "Facebook.com".

Use a current picture for your profile picture. It's fine to have a photo album on your Facebook that has pictures of you when you are younger – which is helpful for high school friends to recognize you with – but don’t make them your main profile picture.

Don’t forget to tag others who are in group pictures. This is a great way to share images with your friends.

Don’t post things that are inappropriate – such as status messages or pictures of you drunk - if you don’t want to share them with a lot of people.

Don’t forget to fill out the favorite music, movies and books sections. These will help others get to know you better, and those whom you have not seen in a while know what you like now instead of what they remember you liking in high school or collage.

Be leery about adding random friends that you don’t really know. You never know what that person’s motive is. The best way to approach someone you don’t really know is to send them a private message. Tell them you have some of the same interests and wanted to be their friend. If someone has a lot of the same friends that you do and they friend request you, ask them how they know you before accepting. Basically just be careful about who you are friends with.

Don’t forget to write on the walls of your friends! Send silly message but don’t put anything personal or incriminating that you would not want the whole world to know about.

Learn how to properly use the privacy settings. This will help keep your “great aunt Edna” from knowing what you did on your vacation with friends - unless you want her to know.

Update your status periodically, but don’t over-do it. It’s cool to state that you “had a great time at the concert last night” - just don’t post again two minutes later that you “wish you could re-live the concert last night”. It’s just not necessary to post that, and your friends don’t want to read it.

Be selective about which apps you get involved with. Some of the more popular ones include “iLike” and “MobWars”. These are great ways to play games with all of your Facebook friends.

Your news feed is fully customizable. You can determine how much of everything you are going to see on your news feed. This includes things such as photos, status updates, notes, and groups.

If you have profiles on other social networking sites – such as Twitter, Myspace, or a blog on one of the many blog sites – make all of these networks work together. You can post links between them. And with Twitter, you can have your tweets automatically update your Facebook as well.

Most people don't know this but you can download your entire Facebook history. Go to the Account Settings page and find the link at the bottom that says, "Download a copy of your Facebook data."

Don't forget the other ways to post other than just the default "Status" way. Your other options, other than adding a photo, are where you happen to be at any given time (called "Place") and posting a "Life Event" which you can then label as Work & Education, Family & Relationships, Home & Living, Health & Wellness and Travel & Experiences.

Some people don't like the chat box being in front of them constantly as some "friends" get a little chatty. You can turn this feature off by going to "Options" in the chat window box itself and selecting, "Turn Off Chat".

Take advantage of the hundreds of apps (applications) that provide entertainment or services and tie into Facebook. There is everything from games to personal schedulers.
