Schedule your garage sale when your neighborhood is having a garage sale collectively. This way it ensures you will receive more traffic. And of course the more traffic you have, the more you're likely to sell.

Don't expect to get top dollar for the items in your garage sale. People come to garage sales to find bargains. And by "bargains" they dont mean 30% off retail. They expect to buy it "real" cheap. If you don't price your items to move, you will probably still be sitting on them at the end of the day.

Price your merchandise. Some people throw a bunch of stuff out on the driveway and expect visitors to make them an offer. But people that go to garage sales would much rather see a price tag. Then, if they think its too high, they can talk you down. Put round colored stickers on the goods so the price is easy to see.

How well your stuff is presented will depend on how much you sell. Take time to clean and dust the merchandise. The nicer the appearance, the better impression it makes on your customers.

Before you have your garage sale, watch the weather channel and try to time it to good weather. The better the weather, the more people will be out shopping yard sales.

Make your signs BIG! Most people make them medium size but they forget that a medium-sized sign is not readable from afar. Make your signs big and the letters big. Use a giant-sized magic marker for the words. Write neatly.

Be careful with what day you have your garage sale on. Avoid holidays like the 4th of July or Memorial Day weekend. People plan other activities on those weekends and are often out of town. Also avoid having your sale on a day of the State Fair or a day when there's a big event in town.

Keep glass bottles and fragile items out of reach of little children. Moms often bring their cute little kids with them to yard sales but those kids can sometimes be quiet destructive.

Make sure if you live in a subdivision that it is ok for you to have a garage sale. Some subdivisions have ordinances about being able to have a yard sale or garage sale at your home.

If you belong to a church or other organization, host a garage sale together. The more people that are selling things, the more people that will show up. You can also use the money raised for something collectively like a group trip or building maintenance,

Regardless of whether you are the seller or the buyer, when going to a garage sale have the following things handy: Sunscreen, small bills, bottle of water and comfortable shoes.

Have a supply of both paper and plastic grocery bags available for the people who buy your stuff. If they buy a few little things, putting them in a bag after they are paid for makes it easier for them to take everything.

If someone is interested in a large ticket item, but does not have the funds. Allow them time to go and get the funds, but tell them the item will only be held for a certain amount of time. If they are late then you will still be able to sell it to someone else who may want it.

Have a separate area to hold onto items that are paid for but people need to come back and get. Make sure they are clearly marked as sold and keep an eye on them.
