Online Shopping Tips

Do you know that the website you're shopping in is safe? Always look for a listed phone number and a physical address (not a PO box). While they may not always have this information listed, it helps you know that the store is legitimate.

There are some sites that have "every" item on sale. This lets you know that nothing is really on sale. They just want to make you think it is. Don't be fooled by this.

Be careful with drop-down boxes for item selections, colors, sizes, quantities, etc. If you have a scroller on your mouse, you need to click outside of the drop-down box before using that scroller. Otherwise, the scroller will change your selection without you realizing it. Always review your order carefully for mistakes before completing checkout.

Did you know that most sellers have a legal obligation to ship within their specified shipping time? And if they don't specify the shipping time, they must still ship it within a 30 day period or notify you. Failure for the store to stick within the guidlines of the FTC (Federal Trade Commision) can result in legal action.

Be wary if online stores don't have clear ordering and shipping guidelines.

It is safer to make an online purchase with a credit card than with a check or money order. This is because if you receive an unnauthorized charge on your account for some reason, your liability, under federal law, is only $50. In some cases the credit card company will even cover the $50 and you'll not have to pay anything.

It is safer to buy from established stores that have been around for awhile. Do a search for that company in Google to see if the name comes up frequently. If it does not, they may be brand new. You should then proceed with caution.

With items that have warranties, buy from "Authorized Sellers". If you don't buy from an authorized seller of that manufacturer or brand, you could run into complications with warranty fulfillment. You can check the manufacturer's website to find out who the authorized resellers are.

Many online stores have a search function that allows you to shop for the "lowest priced" items. If you're pinching pennies, you may want to look for this function. (Not all stores have this.)

Trust your instincts. If something doesn't feel right about the store, you may want to find another placed to shop. Or at the very least, try to get them on the phone so you have more to go off of.

If you search for online gifts or products through Google, Yahoo or another search engine, don't just click on the first links you see. Scroll down a bit and see what else is out there. Sometimes you'll find a real gem further down on the page or even on the second or third page of your results.

Clear your cache before revisiting a store days or weeks later. This is because you may have an older version of certain pages stored in cache and you may not be seeing that stores most current pages. You could be missing out on some new products or information that they've added since your last visit.

Always print out a copy of your order after you make it. This is to ensure that you have a copy of the transaction in case a confirmation e-mail doesn't make its way to you for some reason.

If prices seem "too good to be true", you may have reason to be suspicious. Proceed with caution. Perhaps you can call the store to get more details or clarification.

Never, ever, ever put your credit card and private details into a page unless it says at the top of the screen "https://...." The "s" means "secure" and you'll know that that shopping cart encrypts the information before handling it. Just about all shopping carts have this but if you don't see it, do not continue. Some online shoppers look for the little closed padlock icon at the bottom of their browser to know that their safe. That is certainly a good idea but you most certainly want to see that "https" up there before going any further.

For larger purchases, it's always a good idea to get a copy of the company's other information as well as the order itself. Maybe print out the FAQ page with the terms as well as the description of the product, etc. The more physical evidence you have of the transaction, the better you're protected if anything ever happens.

Always check the shipping price along with the price of the product to determine the purchase value. Sometimes the product itself will be very low cost but the shipping charge might be exhorbitant.

When buying from online auction sites such as Ebay, always check the sellers feedback rating carefully. If they have a lot of negative feedback, avoid them like the plague. If they have very little feedback at all, this means they're new to Ebay and you need to proceed with the utmost caution.
