Default Emergency Tips

Emergency Tips
Make an evacuation plan, not just for your house, but for every room in your house. Knowing multiple ways to get out of a room is great, because during an emergency one of those ways might be blocked.

Have a designated place to meet with your family or friends in the event of an evacuation. Make sure that the designated place is a safe distance. You might have multiple places to meet each other - such as one for a fire, one for an earthquake, etc.

It's a good idea to have someone outside of your local area act as a contact person during an emergency. This person can share with other family members and friends your location and how you are doing during an emergency.

Have a plan for caring for your animals in the event of an emergency. Have your dog and cats health records up-to-date, and if possible, have them tagged with smart-chips. Not all emergency shelters will take pets, so having an idea of where they can go is a good idea - check with your vet.

Keep your emergency plan up-to-date. Mark on your calendar to do a test run of your plan every four to six months. At that time it might also be a good idea to make sure your phone numbers are still accurate and to go over your emergency store of supplies.

Know what your children's school emergency plan is and how you will be contacted in the event of an emergency. Reassure your child that you will come and get them as soon as everything is ok and it is safe.

Make sure you know what to do in the event of an emergency while you are at work. Do you know where the emergency exits are located? If the company you work for does not have a plan for emergencies, then perhaps you should find out how to get your workplace prepared.

Keep an emergency kit ready and waiting at all times. There are many things you should have on hand, including water, first aid supplies, flashlights, and a battery-operated radio. There are more things necessary, and a quick Internet search will give you a full list of things to have on hand.

Teach children to remain calm in an emergency situation. A level head will allow them to asses the situation, call 911, and to explain calmly to the operator what is going on.

Talk to your neighbors and come up with a neighborhood plan in the event of an emergency. Knowing who has generators and medical experience can be very helpful during an emergency situation. Also, getting together will help to ensure the elderly in the area will be helped especially if they cannot help themselves.
