Exercise Tips
Do something that you enjoy. If you find out that running is not something you like try lifting weights or a karate class. Find an activity that suits you.

Make your workout sociable. Bring a friend to work out with you. This will not only make working out enjoyable, but will end up pushing you harder and making working out a routine.

Make a schedule. Plan your workouts ahead of time and consistently so you won't be inclined to skip or change workouts. Routines keep you on track.

Keep your workouts specific. Don't try to cover ever muscle in you body on a single workout. Your muscles are going to need breaks and days to recover, so space out which muscles you want to target. And always leave some days where you don't work out at all, since your body will need this time to recover.

Don't rely on your weight to see progress. Weight can be discouraging because it fluctuates so much and the first weight that will come off your body will be water weight, which can be replaced with water. Base your progress of what you accomplish. If you benched 105lbs to begin with and now 135lbs, that is improvement. Or base your progress with your waist size, as this doesn't fluctuate like weight, so it is a better marker of progress.

Don't compare yourself to others. Yes, there are going to be people who have stronger arms, or weigh less, but don't get caught trying to be someone else. Try to be a better YOU.

Lift lighter weights, but with more repetitions and more sets, and with less recovery time to tone your muscles. Lift heavier weights with less repetitions, and moderate sets with longer recovery times to build up strength. It is always good to switch up toning and heavy lifting, especially to overcome plateaus.

Routines should consist of a warm-up, a workout, and a cool-down. During a warm-up let your body stretch and get a small strain, but keep it comfortable. The workout should be strenuous. You should find yourself struggling and occasionally need someone to spot you on some of the exercises. The cool-down should be like the warm-up but progressively get easier. During this make sure the muscles get properly stretched to avoid cramps and aches. Always eat before and after a workout.

Proper form is key in any workout. It makes each routine consistent so you can build off your past workouts. Form will also make sure you target what muscle group you wanted to target. Most importantly, proper form will keep you from having injuries. Heavy lifting with poor form can over extend ligaments and muscles and dislocate joints. Be sure to practice form before attempting to lift heavily.

Listen to music or watch TV when you're working out. Usually this will enable you to work out much longer as you'll be preoccupied and not thinking about everything else you have to do, or the fact that you would rather not be there.

Wear the proper clothing while working out. You want to wear something that allows your skin to breath and sweat, but does not restrict the movement of the exercise you are doing. Also important are comfortable shoes. Try to break them in before using them for a heavy workout if they are new so that you will lessen the chance of blisters.

Vary your workouts. Think about cross training. Weights one day , jogging the next.

Over time it is important to increase the the intensity of your workouts because your body will adjust to the new activity level. Do more sets, heavier weights, longer workouts, etc

If your goal is to lose weight try the simple "eat less - do more program." If you don't eat it in the first place you won't have to burn it off. Combine that with 30 minutes of brisk activity every day and you will lose pounds and improve your overall fitness.

If your are training for a specific activity or event make sure your workout is correctly targeted. If you are getting ready for a 5K run, cycling or weight training will only get you so far. Also, Practice going beyond the requirements of that event and use that reserve to help you preform better on race day.

Make your workout a regular part of your day. Don't think of it as an add-on. Just like you wouldn't skip brushing your teeth - don't skip the chance to stay fit.

Remember that there are two main types of exercise:
1 - Strength Training
2 - Endurance Training
If you want to accomplish your goals, make sure you understand the appropriate routines for each. Otherwise, you could hurt yourself and show no results.

Cool Re: Exercise Tips

If you exercise outdoors--especially in the heat waves we've been experiencing lately--do it first thing in the morning (before 10 a.m.) or find an alternative activity indoors. You can exercise yourself to heat exhaustion or heat stroke if you're not careful.

And whether you exercise indoors or out, be sure to hydrate yourself before you go...
