Default Meditation Tips

Meditation Tips
Set aside a specific time each day to meditate. It can be in the morning right after you wake up to get yourself prepared for the day, or it can be right before you go to bed to help you unwind. Or if it works best for you, you can meditate in the middle of the day. Just as long as you can be consistent about the time you do it every day.

Breathing is an essential part of meditation. Make sure that you are taking deep breaths each time. Breathing correctly helps calm your heart rate and relax your muscles.

Find a quiet place in your home - not in your office bedroom or workout space - in which you can meditate. You will need somewhere away from things that will distract you such as noises, electronics, and family members.

Take the time to read as much as you can about meditation. This includes information on the benefits of meditation as well as instructional guides to help you at each level (beginner through advanced). You can also listen to instructional CDs and watch DVD’s.

In order to meditate you don’t have to be in the stereotypical position of legs crossed, palms up, and back straight – especially if you’re a beginner. You can sit more relaxed, lie down, have your eyes open or closed - whatever works best for you.

Don’t get frustrated with yourself when you are just getting started. You are going to have thoughts creep into your mind all the time. Just take a moment and refocus on your breathing or a focus point in the room such as a candle.

Meditation is a life long practice. Have patience and don’t expect changes to happen overnight. Take each day one at a time, and without even realizing it you will build on what you accomplished the day before.

Remember to stretch first. While not an overly physical exercise, it takes great strength to sit or lie still for even a 10 minute period. Stretching allows you do sit or lie comfortably without any cramps.

If you can, find a meditation partner. It can be a friend, husband, wife, or other family member. Not only will you begin to reap the benefits of the meditation personally, it will help to build a stronger bond between the two of you.

Many argue that meditating in silence is the best way to really meditate. However, some people need meditation music in order to drown out sounds that they cannot control such as traffic or family members in the house.
