Safety Tips

Keep your car keys on your nightstand beside you bed. This way if you hear a noise outside your home, or you hear a stranger inside your home, you can hit the panic button to set off your car's alarm.

Don't let strangers into your home. If they may ask to make a phone call, you make the the call for them or politely decline if they insist to make it themself. If they claim to be a repair person, do not let them in if you did not make any appointments. Keep your door locked and talk to them through the door.

If you're going to meet someone for the first time or spend time with someone you don't know very well, make sure to tell a family member or trusted friend where you will be and when you are going to return.

Be sure to change up your daily routine. Don't take the same way into work everyday. If you go to the gym, switch up between going in the morning and at night. Vary the days that you run certain errands. This will make it hard for someone to figure out your pattern and thus harder to follow you. If you do feel like someone is following you, go to someone whom you trust or to a public place and call the police. Don't go home as then they will know where you live.

If you drive someone home or to work, be sure to watch them enter safely inside their home or building before driving off. If you are being dropped off somewhere, ask the same of them.

Pay attention to your gut and act on those instincts. If you feel unsafe or uncomfortable in a situation, then just excuse yourself and leave. Its best to be sure you are not in any trouble or danger than to worry about being embarrassed for leaving.

Make sure that no one is hiding in your car by checking underneath, around, and looking inside of it before getting in yourself. Also, check out your surroundings to make sure no one is hiding or lingering around waiting to attack or grab you as you get in your car.

When riding public transportation late at night, be sure to stay awake and aware of your surroundings. Do not discuss your plans for the rest of the evening or your daily routine. If possible, sit near the driver or in a well populated section.

A good rule of thumb is to never meet anyone of the internet. However, if you do decide to do so, do not have them pick you up from your home. Meet them in a well populated, public area. You can also have some friends wait with you when the person arrives to make sure its okay. For the first meeting, it is best to not go anywhere private or isolated. Make sure to have a bailout plan incase the person is odd or acts strange such as having a friend call 20 minutes into the meeting. You can then pretend that an emergency has come up and leave without upsetting the questionable person.

Do not hitch hike. No matter how adventurous it may seem, it is very dangerous and could get you raped or killed.

If you find yourself having to traverse often through an area in which you do not feel safe, a good non-lethal method of protection is Pepper Spray. Even just pulling it out and holding it by your side can be enough of a deterrent if you feel someone is following you or about to threaten you. Be sure to know how to properly use it before attempting to do so. Also, it should be used as a last resort. Try to get to somewhere safe quickly first but if you can't it’s a good protection to have.

Exclamation Traveling light in more ways than one!

Never leave anything in your car that you can't afford to lose. Even with cargo covers and hidden spaces, nothing is truly safe even in a locked vehicle.
