Stop Smoking Tips

Knowing that it is not going to be easy to quit is sometimes the first step. If you think it is going to be easy then you are just setting yourself up for disappointment.

Make a list of reasons why you want to stop smoking. Everyone’s reasons are different and can be anything from setting a healthy example for your kids, to saving the money you are spending, to just wanting to be healthier. Post your list everywhere - on your refrigerator, in your car, on your desk at work.

Set a date for your last cigarette. If you know that date is approaching then the chances of buying another pack will lesson.

Get help to quit smoking. Whether it is the gum, the patch or hypnosis – if you need help then get it. Try, if you can, to have a friend quit smoking with you. The two of you will be going through the same things and will be able to talk about it. They will be able to understand in a way no one else will.

Have a support system. Tell your family and friends that you are trying to quit. Since the process is hard, you are going to need all the cheerleaders and support you can get.

A change of routine sometimes helps. If you find that there are certain times when it is harder to resist getting a cigarette, find something else to fill that time. If you used to sit and smoke at the table after dinner, try getting up and cleaning up the kitchen then move on to another project.

Allow yourself to celebrate when you have reached the first week, first month, first year, without a cigarette. Treat yourself to something special. Also, let yourself know this when you start to quit smoking because it will be a goal to strive to.

Even the best and most persistent person will have a set back or two. Sometimes it takes a few tries before you can manage to quit smoking for good. The goal is to keep trying until you can manage it.

As you realize them, make a list of things in life that are better with out cigarettes. Things like food tasting better, more money each week because you do not have to buy packs of cigarettes, and you are able to play with your kids and/or grandkids without getting winded.

Talk to your doctor about the fact that you want to quit smoking. They will be a great resource of information, and they can track your health improvements as time goes by after your last cigarette.

With you being the one who desires to quit smoking, you are ultimately the one who controls the outcome. Taking complete control of the situation is the first step. "Taking control" is challenging yourself to keep sight of your goal and relive the reasons of why you want to stop - do not let your desire to quit smoking be a passing phase. Because quiting is much easier said than done, many find confidence and success in seeking the advice of their physician. Whatever channel to success you decide, never forget the reasons for why you chose the path of a nicotene-free lifestyle!
