Default Sun Tanning Tips

Sun Tanning Tips

Change your mindset about sun tanning. It is not all fun and games because it involves your health, not just looking good. If you remind yourself about the potential dangers (ie. cancer), you'll likely be more cautious.

Sun tan gradually over an extended period of time. Don't try to get a dark tan in a day or two. It won't happen. You'll just end up frying yourself.

Use a suntan lotion that is higher than SPF 8 to get the protection you need but that will still allow you to tan. If you are light skinned, you'll want to even go higher on the SPF.

Don't forget to turn so that you do not burn. Turn over every 20 minutes or so to allow a more even tan.

Drink lots of water throughout the day. This will replenish the fluids in your body and keep the skin freshly hydrated.

Take your time applying sun tan lotion and be sure to cover "all" body parts. Failure to do so could result in one small area here or there being burned.

Keep a spray bottle nearby and spray yourself now and then to help keep your skin moisturized while tanning.

Do your best to avoid getting burned. It will damage your skin cells and your skin may start to appear splotchy. This will keep you from having an even tan.

Keep these things in mind when determining how long to stay out, how much suntan lotion to use, and what SPF factor:
  • Time of day
  • Your city's elevation
  • How close you are to the equater

When showering (prior to getting in the sun), gently exfoliate your skin with a lufa. This rids of the dead skin and will help you get a more even tan.

Apply moisturizing lotion to your skin after suntanning. This helps your skin retain moisture that was lost while tanning.
