Know the difference: Swine flue symptoms are similar to those of the regular flu in that fever, muscle aches, coughing and fatigue are present. However the swine flu strain is causing more vomiting and diarrhea so this will help you distinguish the two.

If you have visited Mexico and start to develop flu-like symptons or if you have been around someone that was recently in Mexico and are developing flu-like symptons contact your doctor immediately and let him know.

Keep your hands washed and clean throughout the day. Use soap and warm to hot water when washing your hands. Wash for at least 15 to 20 seconds. You can also use alcohol based hand cleaners (wipes or gels) but wipe your hands thoroughly. Encourage your friends and family members to keep their hands washed as well.

Do your best to stay in good health (as you should anyway). Get plenty of exercise and plenty of sleep. Try to keep your stress levels down.

Inform your friends about the seriousness of this new outbreak. Encourage them to be informed and proactive. The more we can work together, the more we can fight this thing.

Keep tissues with you throughout the day. When you sneeze or cough, cover your nose and mouth with a tissue. Be sure to throw the tissue in the trash after using it.

As much as possible, avoid touching or rubbing your eyes, mouth or nose. This is because you can pick up germs from countertops or other surfaces or by shaking hands with other people. Those germs can most easily enter your body if you then touch your face.

You don't need to avoid eating pork or pork products. According to the CDC, swine flu viruses are not spread by food.

In countries where shaking hands is common, you may want to consider avoiding this tradition until the swine flu outbreak passes. To not seem rude, you can simple be candid and inform the individual that you would prefer not to shake hands because of the recent flu concerns. They should certainly understand.

For treatment of the swine influenza virus, the CDC recommends taking the medicines oseltamivir or zanamivir within two days of the symptons. These are antiviral drugs that treat the swine flu and the earlier you can start taking them, the better.

If you contract the swine influenza virus, it is best to stay home from school, work and/or other activities that include contact with large groups of people. This is a socially responsible thing to do that makes a bigger difference than you think. You don't want to put hundreds of others at risk.
