Default Water Safety Tips

Water Safety Tips

First and foremost - learn to swim. If you know how to swim the risk of drowning is lessoned considerably. There are many places you can go to learn, such as your local Red Cross chapter, or YMCA. Sign up for a beginner's class if you have never swam before, or if it's been a really long time and you want a refresher class.

It's always best to swim in areas with a lifeguard on duty - both on beaches and at a pool. It is also always best to read and pay attention to any and all posted signs and rules.

Never leave children unattended around water! Keep an eye on them at all times because even if they know how to swim, they can get in over their heads and not know what to do.

When out on a boat in open water, take extra precaution by wearing a properly fitted Coast Guard-approved personal floatation device (PFD).

Pay attention to the weather. It is not safe to be out on the water in boats, or in the water swimming if a storm arrives.

Learn as much as you can about the water you're in, whether it's a lake, ocean, river, or backyard swimming pool. Knowledge of deep and shallow areas, currents and depth changes is very important. The more you know, the safer you are.

Never drink alcohol when around water. Not only does it impair your judgment while using water craft such as boats, it also endangers your ability to swim and judge water depth.

When swimming in the ocean always be on the lookout for aquatic life - both plant and animals. In addition it is best to stay away from piers and pilings.

While using personal water craft such as jet skis, surf boards and water skis, make sure you are properly trained before heading out to enjoy these activities. Take a beginner's class taught by a certified instructor, and wear the proper gear to help prevent injury.
