Scholarship Tips

Apply to as many scholarships as are applicable to your and your goals. If you only apply for one or two, and don't get them, then you can be in a lot of trouble. Use every resource available to find scholarships - the internet, libraries, guidance counselors, your place of worship, the schools you are applying for and organizations you are members of such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA and others.

A well-written essay might be what sets you apart from all of the other applicants. Take your time in writing your essay - take the time to brainstorm, outline, and write multiple drafts. Have multiple people look over it and edit it before handing it to the scholarship people.

Don't forget about looking for grants as well as scholarships. There are just as many different types of grants available as there are scholarships.

The Internet is a fabulous way to go about looking for scholarships and grants. There are hundreds of sites designed to help you in your search. You can also look on your state's official site, as well as the site for the school you are planning on attending, to see what is offered you can apply for.

Beware when looking for scholarships. If it looks to go to be true, chances are it is. When you find a scholarship that you have not heard of, take the time to research it to make sure it is legitimate and not a fraud situation where someone is after your personal information.

When applying for scholarships, make sure you are aware of what is being covered. There are two types of scholarships - full and partial. Full will take care of the basics for college life, and partial will cover only some of the basics. You will possibly have to apply for multiple scholarships to cover all of your expenses.

Choose the people you ask to write letters of recommendation for you wisely. These people can include teachers, counselors, advisors, coaches, and employers. They have to know you well enough to write about both your personality and your academic achievements. In addition they have to be able to finish it in a timely manner.

There are some very wacky scholarships out there if you look for them. For example, if you're left handed, vegetarian, or willing to make a prom outfit out of duct tape you can get money for college. Finding them may not be easy, but if you do it could be money towards an education.

Start your scholarship search early, and don't rely on others to do all the work for you. If you're the one that is going to be going to school, then you're the one that should be looking for the money to pay for it.

Don't turn your nose up at a scholarship that does not offer an enormous amount of money. Every little bit helps. Imaging if you got ten one hundred dollar scholarships, that's $1,000 you will not have to pay back in loans.

Make sure that you know all of the conditions (such as maintaining a certain GPA, volunteer hours, etc) attached to a scholarship. Some scholoraships have requirements that must be met on either a semesterly or yearly basis. Be sure you can reach the objectives before applying for scholarships with extra conditions.

Another great tip is to be certain to know what is required for you to maintain your scholarship. Most scholarships have certain goals that must be met for your to keep your scholarship. You should check to see if you think you will be able to perform all of the tasks needed so that you do not lose your scholarship.
