Default Chess Tips

Always pay attention to your opponents move. Try to be thinking of what their reasoning behind that move might have been. Look to see if their move has put any of your pieces in danger.

Always have a plan before making a move. Try to think two steps in advance if possible. Try to picture what your opponent might do if you moved a specific piece.

Before you make a play, know what each of the piece on the board are worth. This way if a piece has to be sacrificed you know what you are losing.

Make sure you keep your king safe. Never forget that your opponent is after a "checkmate" just as much as you are!

Remember to have fun. While chess is a game of strategy, it is still a game after all. Learn from your mistakes, and when you win, teach your opponent so that they can improve their game.

The center of the board is the most important place to be and hold on to. You chances of wining increase if you can keep important pieces in this location. Being pushed to the outside leave you more open for attacks.

Don't rush. Chess is not necessarily a speed game. Take as much time as you need. The more you play the faster you will become as evaluating the board and your opponents game.

Don't relax too much. Stay on your toes and one step ahead of your opponent. Letting your guard down could mean loosing the game.

Study and learn. You can't learn the game overnight. Study your opponents moves, watch others play, search the net for examples and videos of games and ask questions. The more you know the better player you'll be.

Play your game. Don't try to mimic someone else's style, make decisions and follow your gut. You will be a better player in the long run.

Castling: Castle your king if you can. It's a great defensive strategy to protect your king. You can castle by moving your knight and bishop out and then moving your king to the spot your rook currently occupies. The rook then moves one square on the free side of the king. You can only do this if there is no pieces between the king and rook and if neither have been moved. You also do not want to move the three pawns in front of the rook as they provide the line of defense.
