Football Tips

For a perfect spiral football throw, grip the ball so that your ring finger is on the first lace with your pinky just behind it, also on the lace. Let the ball roll off your fingers while simultaneously throwing the ball. Keeping your wrist somewhat straight while throwing will increase your chances of a spiral.

Know your football terms and definitions well. You should be comfortable with the meanings of terms like clipping, conversion, hitch and go, nickel defense, and wideout. The more you know the definitions, the more it takes the guess work out and it helps boost your overall confidence.

Give yourself an advantage by seeking to become a versatile football player. For example, it's no longer enough just to be a running back. You've got to help block the defensive lineman, be willing to carry the ball numerous times through the game, and help catch passes like a wide receiver.

When blocking a defender, take control and drive that player in the direction you want them to go. Keep your feet moving and use them as a tool along with your upper body strength.

To improve your game, improve your physical ability. Work on your sprinting speed, stepping drills, muscular endurance, and overall agility. Train like a football pro and you'll become a pro.

Utilize football strategies. Whether they be offensive or defensive, having strategies in place can propel your team forward. Examples of proven strategies are the shotgun, the run and gun, and the power football.

You can avoid fumbling the football if you'll cradle the football with both hands and keep it close to your body. Concentrate on not fumbling while running. Fumbling the football can kill team momentum and morale.

To catch a football in the most effective manner, position your hands together so that your thumbs and forefingers touch.

Winning a game of football is only half physical. The rest is mental. Remember that. Work on your head equally as much as you do your body. Practice mental exercises and positive thinking.

If you think you have sustained a head injury or concussion while playing or practicing, seek medical attention right away. Do not try to be tough and "walk it off". Most concussions can happen without ever losing consciousness. Symptoms of a concussion as reported by the CDC are as follows:

* Headache or “pressure” in head
* Nausea or vomiting
* Balance problems or dizziness
* Double or blurry vision
* Sensitivity to light
* Sensitivity to noise
* Feeling sluggish, hazy, foggy, or groggy
* Concentration or memory problems
* Confusion
* Does not “feel right” or is “feeling down”

If you experience any of these, get evaluated by a health care professional experienced in evaluating for concussion and do not return to practice until you are cleared by the medical staff. If you return too quickly, you can sustain a repeat concussion which according to the CDC can "result in edema (brain swelling), permanent brain damage, and even death."
