Default Skiing Tips

When you're first learning to ski, be sure to start off on the easiest slopes possible unless you have done it before. Leave the black diamonds for the experts.

When you are first learning to ski, take a lesson before starting. Lean up hill with your body. Bend your knees so that you feel like you are sitting in a chair. Make wide turns and DO NOT go STRAIGHT DOWN the hill. When on the lift get off when you get to the top of the hill. Do not go back down on the lift and do not be afraid.

Balance is Key. You will not have a good skiing experience if you are falling down all the time. If you do find yourself not being able to stay up, try some excersises to help you build your balance. Also, taking skiing lessons will help you develop the foundations such as balance that you will need to become a great skier.

Just looking the part doesn't automatically make you a good skier. Buying the most expensive Ski equipment won't translate into being able to ski better. Start with beginners skis which are less expensive than skis designed for higher skill levels. The same applies to ski boots. Let the ski ship know you are just starting and they should get you in the right equipment.

Make sure your ankles are in the proper position for skiing. You need to be in a flexed stance where your ankles are bent and your knees are placed over your toes. Your back must be straight. Don't ever bend at the waist.

The most important safety precaution to take before hitting the slopes is purchasing/wearing a certified helmet. Although it is not required by ski resorts, it is highly recommended for skiers of every skill level. For any parent who may be planning a ski trip, it is advised to purchase a helmet for every child.

The first time getting on a chairlift can be tricky. Chairlifts are the main transportation up to the slopes at many Ski Resorts. You will have to learn how to get on the chairlift while still wearing your skis. To do this, start by sliding forward as the gate swings open and waiting for the next chairlift to arrive from behind you. You should be looking back towards the approaching chairlift so you can see it coming. The forward motion of the chairlift should plant you in the seat automatically. As you’re lifted off the ground, lower the restraining bar so that you are safely secured in the seat. Try not to rock or sway unnecessarily as it can hamper the movement of the chairlift and decrease your safety during the ride.

Getting off the chairlift is a fairly simple procedure. When you get near the unloading area, go ahead and lift the restraining bar in preparation for getting off. Do not move forward in your seat as it can cause you to fall when trying to get down from the chairlift. When the lift reaches the end destination plant your skis down on the ground and, when you feel sturdy, stand up and move away from the location. Do not stay standing where the lift drops you off as you will be in the way of other skiers trying to get down.

If you need to take a rest or stop to adjust your equipment in the middle of a ski run, be sure to get over to the sides and out of the way of the rest of the skiers but where you are plainly visible to on comers. Do not take a seat or stand in the middle of the slope. You will likely cause an accident.

Always make sure that you are in complete control when skiing. This means being able to stop or move out of the way of obstacles at all times. If you feel yourself going to fast or getting out of control, slow down or even stop. When you become out of control, you are a danger to yourself and other skiers.

Make sure to follow all poster signs on the ski trails. They are there for your safety. Even though going off the posted trail may seem like a thrill and more adventurous, you are seriously raising the chance for serious injury. Also, if you are spotted by the ski patrol you can get reprimanded and have your skiing privileges revoked.
