NAMM Show Tips

The NAMM show is one of the music industry's largest trade shows. NAMM, standing for National Association of Music Merchants, hosts this biannual event and draws visitors from all over the world. There is a show in the winter, in Anaheim, CA and another in the summer, usually Nashivlle, TN.

Take some ear plugs. It's loud! And take some comfortable shoes. Like any convention, you're going to be a LOT of walking.

Get there early. A lot of the companies hand out free stuff like samples, posters, bags, etc. They usually don't bring enough for everyone so the early bird gets the worm.

If you're a buyer (store owner), try to set up appointments before hand with the companies. This way, in case it's real crowded, you'll have a reserved time that you can speak with that company's rep.

Seek out the parties and the concerts. Ask at the information desk and at some of the larger manufacturers. They throw some huge parties and feature name musicians in the industry. You don't want to miss these free shows! Be aware though that some are invitation only.

You can't usually buy products at the booths (it's not allowed), but some of the manufacturers don't want to carry the inventory home and they'll make deals on the last day of the show to sell it off. You can get some real good bargains if you ask around.

The slower days of the NAMM show are the first and the last (Thurs & Sunday). This is the time to meet with the reps and take care of business. While you can do it on the other days too, it's much more crowded and difficult.

The general public usually can't get in to the NAMM show but if you know a store owner or a music industry person, you can get in on their pass if they're willing. They only have a limited number though so butter them up early before someone else gets to them first!

Don't miss all the seminars. NAMM brings in music executives and leaders in the industry for lectures and classes. It's free and there's a wealth of information to be gained. The tricky part is scheduling them around everything else you want to do.

Before going to NAMM, take their guide, your vendors and things you want to see and plot out a game plan. Make a schedule of where you will go and when. Like any convention or business trip, the better you plan, the more you can get out of it.

Be sure to carry a lightweight bag or briefcase with some extra room in it. You will most likely be collecting hundreds of flyers and catalogs and they collect faster than you might think.

Other things to have in your bag:
  1. Pens
  2. Highlighters
  3. Calculator
  4. Hand Sanitizer
  5. Vendor List
  6. Game Plan
  7. Gum or Breath Mints
  8. Snacks

Business Cards!!!! Here's a great tip for ya: Take more than you think you'll need. Most people run out of business cards and it's a terrible feeling when it happens. You'll feel stupid and unprepared. Your best bet is to print a fresh batch before you go and put the whole box in your suitcase. Then fill up your bag or briefcase every day before the show.
